Dear parents and children, 

 

Below you will find links to some videos which might help you to understand and practise some of the skills we learn in maths lessons. Each of the videos talks you though the different methods that you will have seen in lessons and will give your parents a chance to see how we do it too (it might be a bit different from how they learnt it!).

Addition 

Column addition (formal written method)

Grid method (this method comes before the formal written method and helps children to understand the place value of each of the digits in the calculation).

Division 

Short division -sometimes known at the 'bus stop method. This method is used when the number we are dividing by is 1 digit (unless we can solve it mentally). 

Dividing 2 digits by 1 digit

Dividing 4 digits by 1 digit (with remainder)

Long division. This method is used when the number we are dividing by is 2 digits (unless we can solve it mentally).
